Obama’s Bad Deal (Nothing New About It)

Posted in Media by Roger D. Hodge on December 8, 2010

Lawrence O’Donnell was determined to keep hope alive tonight on The Last Word in our discussion of Obama’s surrender on the Bush tax cuts. Adam Green and Jane Hamsher made good points; Ezra Klein, with wonky virtuosity, continued to put the best possible spin on a bad deal; I tried, and failed, to argue that Obama is no doubt happy with the deal he ended up with, because the man is completely without principle.

I was initially elated at the guest list, then dismayed at the resulting “interview”/”discussion”. L O’D is turning into quite the performance artist of inadvertent hilarity. First the fiction-defense of the West Wing clip; then browbeating the person who helped him get his current job (Rachel Maddow); and now inviting four stellar guests so he can rant inarticulately at them about his fervent belief in the status quo and giving up hope for all Democratic competence (including any actual historical evidence countering said hope).

The event showed me it’s not even worth taping the show to fast-forward through in case of good guests. Even when he has them on, he doesn’t let them talk; instead just using them to let his stupid flag fly.

I wish they would give that slot to Chris Hayes.
